So, how would you rephrase the afp welcomer mail to improve it
and make it less in need of editing?
Complaining is easy. How about sticking your neck out and getting
a little bit more actively involved?

There I was going to go take a look at it, having never seen it, and I
can't reach the server. Ah well, must be busy with everyone else
looking it up ;-)

Maybe it should start with "If you're not new to usenet and/or have
lurked on afp for a while now then this document may not be something
that you need to read. This document is designed to help new posters to
the group get up to speed quickly and allow them to find useful

Now that I think about it, the clue fairy didn't send me any email this
time around (since I'm posting under a new email, again).
Probably because it's automated and my current reply-to address is a
spam trap. Oh well.
Where *does* one find a copy of the email, so we can start nitpicking it
to pieces? ;)

Traditional (I think originally accidental) mis-spelling of group,
normally used to refer to a fan-group, such as alt.fan.pratchett.

Last time I changed my address -- about two weeks ago -- I got two

The clue fairy (actually, I think the one sending the e-mail is not a
fairy, but a meerkat) cannot de-munge munged or invalid e-mail
addresses. Neither can a lot of posters.
Since the most common e-mail harvesters (still?) only reads the headers
(in which the From line is included), it's recommended that you provide
a valid Reply-To, which isn't normally harvested.

I did answer this already for Esmi. I put it badly - it's not so much the
wording as the fact that it arrives as unsolicited advice, which to some
means admonition and to many comes across as patronising.

Close. Meerkat (the scripts) identifies new posters and sends a list of
of those addresses to the Clue Fairies. One of the fairies (ie me) goes
through the list manually, de-munging where possible and identifying
obvious afp regulars (waves to Thomas Z). I then mail the 'kat back with
a list of who to send the mail to and who to mark as a known poster.
Finally, it sends me a confirmation mail when it has completed a mail run.
The 'kat and I used exchange these mails up to 4 times a day but, since
the Hamster (who wrote and hosts Meeerkat) has had server problems, that
has reduced. It only came back online about 2 weeks ago and tends to
mail out only once a day.

I suspect that Meerkat does try to extract a Reply-To: address in the
first instance but, failing that, defaults to the From: address. After
6 years of doing this, I reckon I've seen every type of mung known to
Man or 'kat and I have to say that the range of methods is suprisingly
limited. :-)

I'm not trying to be deliberately cagey with the text but I am trying to

Personally I think it's a far better start to it as it gives the benefit
of the doubt to the new poster and doesn't treat them all as usenet-
newbies (which is partly what put the hackles up on the three cases I
know of as they objected to be recipients of what they saw as something
highly patronising).

Agreed - I remember, but if a small change like that helps to not put

I like it esmi.
I'll be honest, when I first started my only thought about the clue
fairies letter was regret I didn't get one. It took me a good week to
realize I wasn't left out but had only used such a munged email there
was no hope of getting one.
But I got one last fall when I switched to this email address, so
there was at least that. :)
I think though, it wouldn't hurt to add in early up on the beginning
something that says it's a routine welcome, or that no you haven't done
anything wrong.

Hello, and welcome to Alt.fan.pratchett,
If you're not new to Usenet and/or have lurked on AFP for a while, then
this document may not be something that you need to read. This document

IIRC, it's like coming to an established community

them immediately.
I liked it, actually.

If you are not a new poster to afp, then you're a cheat who's trying
to get fluffy mails and more than their fair share of chocolate. As
such, you should be ashamed, grovel onfroup and sincerely apologise
for the bandwidth loss.

Well, yes, the only way to munge an address is to put .invalid at the

Oh goody! Does this mean I can re-order the whole universe according to
my current whims and fancies? If so, is banning slugs and snails
acceptable? Spiders I can live with quite happily but anything that
'slimes' its way around... *shudder*
Added to which, one of the b*ggers completely decimated a whole pot of
sunflower seedlings overnight recently.

I'm sure Dvorak had two hands. Unless his "New World"
symphony should be "New Hand"...

No, but Ravel _did_ write a Concerto for the Left Hand, apparently for a
pianist friend of his who had lost his right hand.

What is it with slugs and sunflower seedlings? We've got one, count them,
*one* sunflower left to grow to its reputed majestic size. There are all
sorts of delicious, tender weeds that they could eat, but noooo... straight
for the sunflowers every time. And what have squirrels got against pots of
mariglod [1] seedlings prettily arranged on an old tree-stump? None of those
are left.

The Blonde and The Bloke managed to save five sunflowers from a whole pot of
seedlings. Those losses were also slugged to death. It must be a favourite
food.

I read in a local paper recently that snails are repelled by copper. It
may be worth a try if you can get it right. The article showed some pots
with copper bands on that was supposed to be snail safe.
